Look Up

For this visit, I was still feeling anxious. But as you can see from the picture above, this is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. God told me to “look up.” I gazed skyward into a big beautiful canopy of blue.

I immediately felt better.

There is something about being stuck in my head and looking down all the time. Or even staying indoors. It is not good for my mental health.

So now if I am freaking out a little, I go outside and look up at the sky and I feel better.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.”
— Psalms 19:1 (NIV)

Shepherd’s Note

Psalm 121 begins with a lift of the eyes, and that small physical act carries a real theology. Where we look shapes what we expect. A man who stares at the ground long enough starts to believe the ground is all there is. Anxiety does that; it bends the neck down toward bills, symptoms, headlines, and worst cases. Looking up is not pretending those things are small. It is remembering they are not the largest things in the room. The hills are big, but the Maker of heaven and earth is bigger, and help with a name and a face is nearer than the trouble feels.
