Climbing the Trail
This day I climbed the trail behind my neighborhood. He’s got some good words there too. Climbing the trail was not easy, but it felt great at the top.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
Shepherd's Note
Hebrews pictures the life of faith as a marked course run in company, with a great crowd of witnesses who have already climbed it. Perseverance is not celebrated here as grim endurance; it is run with the eyes fixed on Jesus, who pioneered the trail and perfects the faith of those who follow. The reward named in this entry is not only at the summit. There is a reward inside the climb itself, in hindrances thrown off and a course that turns out to have been marked out with care.
