I Shall Not Want

I shall not want… Not “I shouldn’t want,” but “I don’t need to want.”

“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.”
— Psalm 23:1

Shepherd’s Note

David's confidence in Psalm 23 rests on a relationship, not a supply chain. The LORD is my shepherd, and everything about not wanting flows from that one word, my. A sheep does not manage the pasture, guard itself at night, or plan the route to water. The shepherd does, and because care is personal, contentment becomes possible. I shall not want does not scold desire or pretend needs are small. It says the One who leads you knows them already. In His keeping, grasping can loosen, and your heart can rest.
